The Supreme Court on Monday, September 2, 2024, dismissed the West Bengal Government's plea challenging the Calcutta High Court's decision to grant bail to Sayan Lahiri, a leader of the Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj.
Lahiri was one of the key organizers of the August 27 march to the State Secretariat (Nabanna) to protest against the rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor.
A Bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra observed that "prima facie" there was sufficient ground to grant bail to Lahiri. The Calcutta High Court had previously granted bail to him on August 30, 2024.
Lahiri was arrested the evening of the protest for allegedly leading the rally, which police claim escalated into violence, causing damage to public and private property and resulting in attacks on police personnel.
The Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj, an unregistered student group, was one of the two organizations that initiated the August 27 'Nabanna Abhiyan'.
